Mentioned on Diggnation Podcast

Listening to the Diggnation podcast here this morning while poking around on World of Warcraft…

First story they do, a story I submitted. Thus they said my name :D, Kevin Rose said ‘OwlBoy’. Go me.

Really recommend Diggnation, a fun tech podcast. Along with Digg.com for tech news.

I have approved all the comments posted since I upgraded wordpress. Seems authorization was turned on (or added) in the upgrade.

For now it won’t need approval, if I get spam I will have to switch it back.

Comment away! I love comments, and was getting sad I never had any, till I found 8 in the queue. 🙂

Jalopy: The Hard Drive

Yesterday I picked up an 80GB HD from CompUSA. While at the checkout I noticed a DVD Burner in the trash can at the register, the cashier seemed like a nice guy, so I asked if I could take it. He said he did not care, so I took it along. I assumed I could use it’s enclosure to put a drive in in the future.

When I got home I cleaned up my desk, then opened up my G5. To find it did not have the same connections as the drive. My G5 has Serial ATA connectors in the bays. The cheap drive has Parallel ATA. So I went ahead and ripped apart the DVD Burner. Found out a CD had exploded in it by the looks of it, had CD-Rom fragments inside.

The connectors were all there to get the HD hooked up, so I connected it, and plugged her into my mac, a dialog poped up to format it, I named it Jalopy and then checked the system profiler and found that it was a USB 2.0 connection!

So I drilled some holes in the side of the metal casing, screwed the drive to the side, and made sure it stayed sill. Closed her up, and now I got a crazy USB2.0 80gb external Hard Drive.

Dug up old stuff.

I was looking on my site backup, and found a bunch of things I wanted to put back on the web, and have people be able to take a look at again. Looking back on things, I found many items I feel I did a great job creating. Others look kinda stupid, but they represent what I could do at the time. Some things are totally silly.

H.264 / 5.1 AAC Test.

This won’t stay up long, so get it while you can… (I don’t have oodles of bandwidth)

I decided to test out encoding a trailer in the new H.264 with 5.1 AAC Audio, turned out pretty good in my opinion.

Download: returnofthekingH264_surround.mov 32mb ( downloads)

Remember: You need Quicktime 7 to play.

Request: If you know of a place I can host this sample video on, please let me know.

Neat info: Apple has H.264 HD samples here.

5.1: If your on a Mac with a 5.1 Audio card, it should play in the proper speakers. Does for me in analog.

Man, last night I was up till like 3am (woulda been 2 w/o daylight savings :P) re-installing windows on my friends PC. Seems every time I’m over something is going goofy with it. This time, if he tried to open any windows to browse the files on his comp, the whole thing would stall. Yet other apps would start up and run ok. So, I started up iTunes, and burned 8 MP3 CDs to save his music at least, then re-created C: and re-installed Windows XP.

I think it was malware or a virus that messed up his comp, using IE to surf the net seems quite dangerous to me, so I recommended he install Firefox, and use that from now on. This is one of the few reasons I am happy macs are not as popular as windows PCs. Small Target.
